It's Nutrition and Hydration Week!

This week is Nutrition and Hydration week, so we thought we’d jump on this one because of its relevance to skin health.  We love to educate and the benefits of eating and drinking healthily has such a massive impact that we wanted to share it with you.

What we put on our skin on the outside is massively important as the wrong creams and lotions can wreak havoc and leave the skin feeling and looking very compromised.  However, rebalancing the skin from the inside is going to reach cells that it is impossible for topical skincare to reach. Also, our skin portrays our general health and if we are eating badly then our skin will represent that on the outside, acting like a mirror.  We have an internal Eco System.

One of our favourite supplements that we recommend for EVERYONE is Skin Youth Biome from the Advanced Nutrition Programme.  This supplement has a unique combination of good bacteria specifically developed to target skin.  It has full scientific studies into the strains of bacteria and has formulated from 5 billion active cultures.  WOW!  So, what will this do for our skin?  Independent research and studies showed significant improvement in hydration, wrinkle depth and skin integrity, whilst there were also small improvements in smoothness and elasticity.

Microbiome has become hot in the skin industry of late as we are all discovering new ways of keeping young.  If our microbiome isn’t functioning properly then this can lead to several issues such as:  Immune System disorders, inflammation, fatigue, moodiness, inflammation, issues with metabolism as well as skin concerns such as problematic skin and ageing.

It all must start from within.

Water isn’t as sexy as this supplement, but the results that it provides the skin is definitely sexy.  As well as flushing out toxins, water is essential for the skin to stay plump and youthful.  Drinking water will hydrate the skin, but one of the most important serums for this is Hyaluronic Acid.  We absolutely love Hyaluronic Acid because it is suitable for every skin type.

This isn’t a type of acid that will strip the skin.  In fact, Hyaluronic Acid is produced naturally by the skin cells and we need it to maintain moisture.  In fact, and here’s the really sexy part, Hyaluronic Acid holds a thousand times its weight in water.  Hyaluronic Acid acts like the ultimate skin drink, plumping out lines and wrinkles, even deeper ones.  It also has anti-oxidant properties so acts to protect the skin.

If you’re looking to add a Hyaluronic Acid Serum to your skincare regime, then Environ’s Hydrating Serum is just what you are looking for.  This high quality, pure Hyaluronic Acid is applied to the skin underneath your other creams.  Try it, you’ll be astonished by the results.

Why is it important to take supplements for the skin and general health?

There is a lot of noise around supplements and whether they really work and whether or not we need them.  There is a lot of information out there that offers conflicting advice, and this just exasperates the confusion.

It is proven fact that we need vitamins to maintain health and stave off disease.  However, if we are getting a healthy diet do we really need supplements for health or for skin?  The answer is most definitely YES.  What you have to remember is that supplements aren’t a replacement for a healthy diet and lifestyle, but just as the word says, they are there to supplement it. This means that it completes (or enhances) something else when added to it.  In this case, your diet. We need so much more than the recommended daily allowance of vitamins to really optimise health and skin.  The RDA is really there as a guide to help save off major diseases such as Scurvy or Rickets, but if we really want to ensure that we are at our optimum then we need more.

Here are several reasons why you should supplement daily.

1.      With the importing of food and it not arriving on our plate as fresh as it could, then our sources of nutrition aren’t as sufficient as they once were.  Important nutrients are lost through growing conditions, storage, cooking and refining.

2.      Our lifestyles are busier and are affected by technologies that also put stress on our systems.

3.      You won’t get optimal results on your skin just by applying creams.  We need to feed the skin from within as well to really make transformations.  Combining superior nutrition with superior skincare will give you the best results in the shortest period of time.

4.      Nutrition is fundamentally involved at every stage of skin development.  Vitamins feed the skin over the entire body reaching even the deeper layers of the skin.

5.      It is vital for boosting our immune systems and maintaining homeostasis in our bodies.

6.      Many of us are deficient in Vitamin D due to lack of sunlight and spending time outdoors.

7.      Medications can really deplete our nutrients.

So what supplements should you be taking?  This is a very personal choice and depends on what your concerns are, so a consultation is key.  Vitamin A is the most important vitamin for the skin.  95% of people don’t get the RDA of Vitamin A in their diet.  However, by combining Vitamin A with a combination of phyto-nutrients will bring about truly amazing transformations.  Omega 3 and 6 combined is excellent for dehydrated skin and conditions such as eczema and psoriasis.

If you are requiring vitamins for maintaining health, again it depends on what you are wanting to address. At this time of the year, when immune systems can be compromised, then I recommend a combination of a high quality, high strength Vitamin C supplement, along with Colostrum-C.  Colostrum is the substance produced by mammals in the first hours after giving birth.  It naturally contains immunoglobulins which is the most common antibody in the body and are very important in fighting bacterial and viral infections.

Here at Sarah Hurst Skin & Beauty we recommend supplements from the Advanced Nutrition Programme.  Why have we chosen these over the myriad of supplements on the market?  The Advanced Nutrition Programme follows the HFMA (Health Food Manufacturers Association) guidelines which means:

·       They are manufactured to pharmaceutical standards

·       They source the best quality bulk ingredients

·       They have routine Laboratory checks

·       They have the best quality ingredients without artificial additives.  Free from artificial preservatives, colours, flavouring, PCBs and fillers with no added sugar, salt, soya, wheat, gluten, yeast, lactose or dairy products.

·       Omegas are Epax™, which use an advanced purification and concentration technology.

·       There is research behind each ingredient to identify effective levels

·       The Advanced Nutrition Programme is committed to promoting environmental awareness.  Please watch the YouTube video to see more about their endeavours.

Frequently Asked Questions about Accor Plasma Pen Treatment

What is Accor Plasma Pen?

ACCOR NF+ stands for Aesthetic Cosmetic Corrector Plasma Pen.  This hand-held device emits a small electrical arc from the tip of the pen without actually touching the skin.  This plasma arc vaporises the skin giving an immediate tightening effect to the surrounding skin.  These small points form scabs that drop off over the following week post treatment revealing a smoother and tighter skin.

What makes the Accor treatment different from other plasma pen treatments?

Accor is the first low frequency plasma device.  This means that it gives a shallower but wider impact on the skin, causing less trauma as it doesn’t penetrate too deeply, but still very effective treatment due to its wider pattern.

What can it treat?

Skin that requires tightening and lifting, pigmentation and age spots and skin tags.

Where can it treat?

We can treat anywhere on the body, within reason, that requires skin tightening and pigmentation removal including:

·     Face and neck; Soft face lift, eye lid lift, frown lines, jowl lift and neck and throat.

·     Stomach

·     Arms (bingo wings and loose skin)

·     Hands

Is it painful?

We’re not going to lie here, because we want to let you know what to expect so that an informed decision can be made.  Topical anaesthesia is applied to the area to be treated for an hour prior to treatment (except in cases of small skin tags and pigmentation).  This does help take a lot of the impact off the treatment, and the rest is down to your own pain threshold and where the treatment is applied. Some areas of the body (eg forehead) are more sensitive that others. On the whole though it is generally comfortable.

How long does a treatment take to perform?

It depends on the size of the area that we are treating, it could be as quick as 15 mins or as long as an hour.  We can advise you on consultation.

Do I need to take time off work after the treatment?

It depends on the area that has been treated and how self-conscious you are.  Personally, I choose to get on with life as normal as I can’t afford to hide away, but that’s not for everyone. We can conceal the treated area well, but it can’t be hidden completely.

So, what can I expect from a treatment?

You will be booked in with either Rita or Sarah

We will perform an initial consultation and go through everything with you about what to expect, results you can hope to achieve, assessing area(s) that require treatment as well as checking your medical history.  On this appointment we also perform a patch test.

The consultation and patch test takes place at least 3 weeks before the treatment.

On the treatment itself you will arrive at the salon and the anaesthetic cream is applied approximately 1 hour before the treatment is performed to give it optimum time to work. You can just lie there and relax during this time.  We will already have assessed how we are performing the treatment, but we will look again and ensure that this is still the correct treatment path.  We then carry out the treatment, ensuring that you are comfortable throughout.

How many treatments will I need?

It depends on the severity of the condition being treated and the results that you want to achieve. We also have to factor in lifestyle and how you are currently looking after your skin.  Sometimes one treatment can be enough, sometimes 2 or 3.  We can advise you at the point of consultation what we would expect.

Can I have plasma treatments if I have botox or fillers?

You can have the treatment in the time leading up to having these procedures done, but we can’t treat for at least 3 or 4 months after.  Why?  Because these will artificially disguise the wrinkles.  We need to be able to see them to be able to effectively perform a treatment.

How experienced are you at Accor plasma pen treatments?

Rita and Sarah have been performing these treatments for a year now with great success.  Sarah is now a National trainer for Accor plasma pen due to her skill and experience.  Both Rita and Sarah have over 55 years of experience in the skin industry and working with precision treatments between them and therefore you are in very safe hands.

I don’t normally do much with my skin, but now feel that this might be great for skin ageing.  Will this help me?

Yes of course! However, with all skin treatments we recommend you look at the bigger picture. All skincare brands that are found on the high street are classed as cosmetics, so basically that means that they won’t absorb into the deeper layers of the skin.  We recommend cosmeceutical or pharmaceutical brands that you will only be prescribed by skin experts.  This means that they have the science behind them and that they will absorb into deeper layers and really bring about results to your skin at a cellular level. With all skin treatments, to get the best results and create strong skin health, we need to be looking at the bigger picture to really bring about transformations.  The stronger the skin the better the results will be.

Are there any side effects?

The main risk is pigmentation from the treatment.  However, we always patch test everyone prior to treatment to see how the skin responds and carry out a thorough consultation so these are really minimised.  Any pigmentation issues would only be temporary.

Is this the best treatment for pigmentation?

We’ve just been talking about it possibly bringing about pigmentation, however this is a great treatment for age spots and small pigmentation patches.  Is it the best treatment?  For small patches, yes, but for larger areas then we need to be looking at SSR or peels.

I hear that this also removes skin tags, is this correct?

Yes, this can remove skin tags really effectively.  However, Sarah has also been working with advanced electrolysis for 30 years, and on a personal level finds advanced electrolysis a much easier and less aggressive treatment for skin tags.

Is there anything else I need to know?

You may have questions of your own that we haven’t covered in this blog.  We are holding an event on Sunday 13thJanuary, at 11am at 12pm.  This provides an opportunity for you to see the treatment in action, ask any questions and also if you decide it’s for you to get a very special rate.  There are only 16 spaces, 8 at each time, so please get yourself booked in by calling us on 01273 270709 or email sarah@sarahhurst.co.uk.

You can also see our video on the treatment and see lots of before and after images here

Beauty is More than Skin Deep with Observ Skin Diagnostics

Back in the day, if a beauty therapist wanted to closely examine your skin to decide which treatments would be best, they would look closely at it usually using a bright light.  Fortunately, now we can look deeper.  The Observ Skin Diagnostics machine we have in our Brighton salon uses a broader range of light than the Wood’s lamp many salons use so can give a clearer picture of exactly what is going on with your skin on the surface and beneath it so we can tackle problems before they’ve even fully surfaced and deal with existing conditions on a deeper level.

How it Works

Like a Wood’s lamp, the Observ machine uses the fluorescence in the skin to detect underlying problems.  This works as different types of skin condition can be identified by the colour and patterns of fluorescent that are revealed under true UV light.  What makes the Observ different to other skin diagnostic systems is that it uses a wide range of light types to reveal a broader range of problems.  Light types include a similar type to the Wood’s lamps, true UV, parallel-polarization mode, cross-polarization mode and a complexion analysis mode.  Pictures taken under these lights are uploaded to an iPad so they can be analysed by one of our skin experts.  Using the iPad means we can zoom in to get a really close look at certain areas and store the pictures.

What it Reveals

Using all these different types of light and magnification allows the Observ machine to diagnose problems associated with sun damage, pigmentation and melasma pigmentation as well as the following:

• Porphyrin in acne and comedones

• Free oil flow

• Plugged pores

• Areas of keratinized skin

• Areas with diminished circulation

• Dehydrated skin

• Vascular conditions

• Rosacea

• Skin irritations

• Areas of lipid-dry skin

• Milia

• Area with collagen loss

• Sensitive and thinned skin areas

• Wrinkle formations

• Fine skin surface texture

• Fine line patterns

• Microrelief

Why We Use It

Once we have identified exactly which issues your skin has, we can design a regime of products and treatments which are perfectly tailored to your needs.  Using this depth of analysis suits the way we work because we don’t just treat surface problems, we use treatments to penetrate deeply into the lower levels of the skin and vitamin supplements to nourish and restore the skin from within.  When used as part of the IIAA 100 Day Reset Programme, we take more pictures at the end of the programme and compare these to original to demonstrate how effective the treatment plan has been.

When you attend a skin analysis at our salon in Brighton, we use the Observ machine and then talk you through the pictures to show you everything that is going on with your skin.  This is a long thorough consultation where our experts point out all the various features of your skin and make recommendations to address any concerns you have.  They will answer all your questions to help you gain a deeper understanding of your skin and its needs.  To take full advantage of all the benefits offered by our Observ Skin Diagnostics system book a skin analysis here or call 01273 270709.
